BRAILES
21st - 24th FEBRUARY 2013 Photographs and some Video
Stewards for the weekend were Gay Butler and Allan Porter.
It was a bitterly cold Thursday when the meet started with hot tea and cake in the hall at 4pm. Thursday was a quiz and a social. Gay was MC so she and Allan started the night off. We were delighted to welcome members from Home Counties, Wessex, South East and South West who all joined in the fun. Then we enjoyed a couple of dances followed by songs from Rosemary and Wendy. Tea was at nine made by Jude and Von, Don (our chairman) assisted by eating the chocolate bourbons! The second half started with dances called by Rosemary. Stan and Peggy entertained us with a couple of songs followed by Alan and Bob on guitar. Then a couple of dances called by Lyn, and a tune from Dave on the uke.
Wendy invited us to attend yoga on Friday and Saturday starting the days off in a relaxing way. After coffee some of us did crafts and others played RummiKub. After lunch we had a band practice led by Allan, an impromptu spoons workshop followed by a ukulele session which helped us decide what songs we were going to perform that night. Friday evening started at 6:30 with excellent soup and rolls and CAKE and a "feely" bag quiz. Then Don took over as MC for the evening with Rosemary calling some of the dances. Lots of star turns and callers with skiffle at the end of the night.
On Saturday, Bob and Lynn led a walk around Brailes and in the afternoon we had a talk by Hazel and Peter, with demonstrations, about the origins of Blue Grass music which we all enjoyed. This was followed by a band practice ready to play the overture to the evening's proceedings. We had a uke session again and then a lesson on Line Dancing by Bill followed by an American Supper. Brian was MC and once again there was a real variety of entertainment. Frances entertained us with a couple of poems. Lance told a few jokes. We tried line dancing with Bob, a verse from Norma and Alan and Bob on the guitar. The Midland Folk Ukulele band also put in an appearance.
Pete and Hazel on the Banjos, a couple of tunes from Gay and Alan, songs from Wendy, David, Stan and Peggy
And it didn't end there because after coffee next morning we had another sing around before everybody went home.

BECKFORD
15th - 18th MARCH 2013 Photographs and some Video
A very wet weekend but we had a good turnout. The weekend included our AGM and a Group Council meeting. Luckily we had enough hard standing to site nearly all the motorhomes leaving the wet field to the caravans. To spare embarrassment we will not say the name (Richard) of the chairman whose 4x4 stayed in 2 wheel drive and slowly sank. A number of units had to be helped on and off the field but we coped. Friday evening we gathered for a chat and then an evening of song and dance with John Jackson as MC.
Saturday while the hall was in use for the Council meeting members either went out to local places such as Evesham, walked or got together for a chat and sing around. On the afternoon we had a music workshop and practised a few ukulele songs.
There was an American tea followed by our evening of entertainment with Gaynor as MC. Her spoons duet with Richard Perry on violin is always well received.
We had a bit of an Irish theme as it was St Patrick's Day on Sunday with a few silly hats and some Irish songs. Sunday after morning tea we had our AGM and members' meeting. A new committee was elected. Details will be in the newsletter and on our website midlandfolkgroup.co.uk Wendy & John Collins stood down from their roles as PRO and Sites Officer. Thanks go to them for all their hard work that they have done for the Midland Area. We also had the opportunity to wish George & Brenda Illsley best wishes on 57 years of happy marriage. Thank you to all the members who managed to get to this event and we look forward to seeing you all at Easter.

LITTLE WITLEY
12th - 14th APRIL 2013 Photographs
Sun, rain, sun, hail and wind - we had it all at Little Witley but it did not stop a good turnout with hardly any room left on the car park of this lovely village hall.
Friday evening began with two delicious homemade soups and rolls from Liz and Von. After a good chat MC John Jackson organised an evening of entertainment including a dance routine from Amy and a different line dance from Bill.
Saturday, after morning tea, Wendy led a workshop to make squares which will eventually be made into a quilt. We had a little band practice with melodeons accompanied by guitar and mandolin. Some went out to visit the local area or for a walk and some of us had lunch and a snooze. Late afternoon we had our ukulele workshop and then got ready for our American supper which disappeared rapidly.
Liz was MC for Saturday night with a varied programme our usual folk dances, line dancing songs and jokes. Brian's boating songs were very popular and Mick's performance will not be easily forgotten. Our visitors from Derby DA enjoyed their first Folk meet and joined in every dance. The skiffle finale was good fun.
Sunday after morning tea we had a dance workshop run by George and then it was time to pack up and head for home.

EVESHAM (Evesham high School)
3rd - 6th MAY 2013 Photographs
The sun shone down over this preview 3 night weekend at Evesham High school stewarded by Gay & Allan. Let’s hope the weather is as nice next year when this site hosts the Easter 2014 meet.
Most of the caravans were on a level playing field at the back of the school and the motor homes on hard standing at the front. We now have plenty of taps for us all to use on both sides of the school. After pitching up we met for a chat and Friday evening’s entertainment organised by Gay, our MC for the evening.
Saturday, after morning tea & coffee, we went on a grand tour of the school to sort out rooms and locations for the Easter meet. We would like to say thank you to James for all the help he gave over the weekend. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for him. After lunch there was time to visit local attractions. There was a craft workshop and ukulele workshop. More new beginners!
The evening started with our now traditional American Supper which disappeared very quickly. The evening’s entertainment, with MC Lance doing his own comedy act in between, included spots, dances and ended with our ukulele band and skiffle. The band keeps getting bigger every meet. One day there will not be an audience which already happens in skiffle where everybody plays something which can vary from normal instruments to beer cans.
Sunday after morning tea we had a general meeting about Easter 2014. Then some of us went into Evesham for the VE Festival which included period music, stalls, cars and military vehicles. Back on site for Band practice and uke practice. Some people ate together in the hall while others took advantage of the sunshine for a BBQ.
The night’s entertainment with MC Stan included dancing to live music from our band as well as recorded tracks. Among the spots we had Amy, Molly and Betty who sang with Molly playing the ukulele. A first performance for Betty and a wonderful bit of playing by Molly.
It was very nice to see Roy & Joyce who called a dance. Paul and Celia came for the first time and have joined the Folk Section. They joined in all the activities and really enjoyed themselves. More uke players for the band.
Monday after morning tea, committee meeting and a clear up we made a leisurely departure. It is a nice site and the preview will help to iron out the few little problems we found.

ASTLEY
21st - 23rd JUNE 2013 Photographs
The Big Birthday Weekend
We had a large turnout for our Big Birthday meet at Astley stewarded by Liz and Brian.
Friday evening began with a choice of three soups with rolls provided by Liz, Gay and Von. After a chat to catch up on news the evening entertainment began with Don as MC. Dances were called by Wendy, Stan, Gay and Joyce. The spots for the night included Mervyn playing his clarinet and we had songs from Henry’s Orchard.
Saturday came and, after morning tea, we had an impromptu spoons workshop led by Gay. An impressive sight and sound which was very popular especially with the younger members. There was then some free time to visit the local area. The sale at the sewing shop in Stourport was very popular with the ladies. Many local gardens were open as part of the National Open Gardens scheme. On the afternoon we had a programme of craft, band practice and ukulele.
Saturday evening began with a BBQ. The burgers and sausages disappeared as fast as they came off the grills.
Thanks to the chefs Steve, Bob & Don for their wonderful cooking under the gazebos. Not many burnt bits!
Highlights of the evening were Amy calling her first dance with us to live music, Henry’s Orchard who we hope to see regularly, a Birthday song from Jude, Liz and Bob who was also MC for the night. The Midland Spoon Band also gave their debut performance which was a great success.
There was a meeting of co-ordinators of the 2014 Easter Meet after Sunday morning tea and fee payment.

SINTON GREEN
23rd - 26th AUGUST 2013 Photographs and some Video
A lovely weekend stewarded by Mick & Judith. Nice to see plenty of signs out to guide us up the narrow lanes. Thanks Mick. A new money saving idea from Stan & Judy was to arrive on the back of a breakdown wagon - saves on diesel! A gentle evening of song and dance run by MC Don ended a pleasant day.
Saturday, after morning tea, there was a choice of a walk, crafts, ukulele or melodeon workshops. After lunch there was another ukulele workshop for some very keen beginners and a band practice. Our usual American Supper was enjoyed by all - a lovely way to start the evening and have a good chat. George was MC for the night and we had a good mix. The band played for a couple of dances though next time we might play the correct number of bars to suit the dance. Welcome to Dave & Eve who entertained us every night. We hope to see them regularly.
Sunday was the day of the World Folk Group Boules Championship. After long hard fought games the winners were Jackie & Judith. Audrey was MC for the evening. The evening ceilidh was rounded off by skiffle featuring The Ukuladies - Eve & Jackie who played for the first time with us after a lot of hard work in the uke workshops.
Monday was hot and sunny so many of us made a very slow and relaxed departure unlike Stan & Judy who departed on the back of the breakdown wagon again. No worries about rising fuel cost for them.

6th - 8th SEPTEMBER 2013 Photographs
Rain was forecast for the weekend and it appeared to be correct as we arrived and set up in the wet. Then the sun came out and stayed out on the days until we went home on Sunday. We had a good turnout considering the weather forecast with visitors from Wessex and South West.
Friday evening started with Von's homemade soup with rolls. There followed, after a chat to catch up on news, a good evening of entertainment including a poem from Mervyn telling of his problems at a previous meet. Lance recited what seemed to be a never ending version of The Walrus and The Carpenter until he remembered the last verse. Along with our traditional dances we had line dancing from Bill.
Saturday after morning tea there was a choice of a walk, visiting local towns or a ukulele workshop. We have even more beginners trying to learn the uke. After lunch Bill ran a line dancing workshop which was enjoyed by all but very hard work with the usual problems of working out which is the left foot and which is the right. Our melodeon players followed with their practice. A number of visitors arrived as we started the evening with a toast to Gay & Jim Lilley who were celebrating 45 years of marriage.
After the American supper, our MC George ran a very pleasant evening. Highlights were Mervyn playing his clarinet, Rosemary singing on her own and the line dancing workshop paid off as many got on the floor and danced perfectly. The evening ended with skiffle. Everyone joined with playing an instrument or something that made a noise.
Sunday, after paying fees, some went home, some for a walk and some of us just sat and enjoyed the sunshine for as long as possible before heading home.

BRAILES
25th - 27th OCTOBER 2013 Photographs and some Video
There was a capacity crowd at our Brailes Halloween Meet with visitors from other areas and DAs. A very popular meet stewarded by Wendy & John.
Friday evening began with soup & rolls and a chance to chat and catch up with old friends. A Spider Drive followed (like a Beetle Drive but scarier). The evening was rounded off by MC George giving us a variety of music and dance.
Saturday, after morning coffee and fee payment, there were crafts and music workshops. The decorated hall was the ideal setting for all the costumes which appeared as evening arrived. Face painting and pumpkin carving added to the atmosphere. The Undead had arisen!
The evening started with an American Supper. There was so much food we couldn't eat it all. Liz & Brian's chickens got a feast from the leftovers. We had competitions for best decorated table, children's and adult's costumes. See the photos from the link above.
Then followed the entertainment organised by MC Liz. The highlights were visitors Colin & Lynda singing for us, Amy calling a dance and the usual superb music from Hazel & Peter.
Sunday was time to pack up and go home for many but a number of Midland members moved on to Evesham to continue preparations for the Easter Meet 2014.

SYTCHAMPTON
22nd - 24th NOVEMBER 2013 Photographs by Mark Burton
Our last meet of the year was at Sytchampton Village Hall stewarded by Gay & Jim. We were joined by friends from HC & NC.
Friday evening began with soup and rolls organised by Gay. There was plenty to go round - indeed many of us had seconds. John was MC for the evening and Angie called her first dance.
Saturday, after tea, Di ran a melodeon workshop. They were accompanied by mandolin and tin whistle and we practised a tune for the evening. Others had gone out to visit the surrounding area. Everybody brought their lunch into the hall and squeezed around one long table, cosy and fun.
During the afternoon some played board or card games or did crafts. There was a line dancing lesson and a ukulele workshop and time flew by. We had to rush to get the tables and chairs ready for the American Supper.
Our first wave of visitors came to share the meal and, as usual, there was a wide variety and more than enough to go round. We had the normal rush for JJ's trifle which does contain some trifle in the alcohol.
More visitors came as Bill, our MC for the evening, started things off. We had a wide variety including Angie calling her second dance, line dancing and a dance to live music led by Di. Molly and Amy sang a song with signing which we all had to join in and Liz and Brian did a song with actions. Not much chance of a rest on this night!
Sunday we had tea and paid our fees. A bit of tidying up it was time to go home. It had been a cold weekend so we were glad of the use of the hall for most of the time we were there.
